Red Flag Warning: Extremely critical fire weather conditions, Feb. 17
Gusty winds and low humidity today, Feb. 17, are creating conditions favorable to rapid fire spread. Avoid outdoor burning and any activity that may produce a spark and start a wildfire.
The National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning until 7 p.m. today for much of the I-25 corridor and Northeaster Plains, including Fort Collins. A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly. A combination of strong wind, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior.
Traffic accident: Avoid College Avenue between Laurel St. and Prospect Road.
UPDATE (7:10 p.m.): Accident has been cleared from College Avenue and the road has reopened to traffic.
Original post: At 5 p.m. Feb. 3, a traffic accident at Lake Street and College Avenue is impacting traffic. Avoid the area and seek alternative routes. Do not exit main campus via eastbound Lake Street or Pitkin Street. College Ave. southbound is closed from Pitkin St. to Prospect Road.

Prepare for frigid temperatures Jan. 23-24
An arctic airmass will settle over eastern Colorado Friday and Saturday, Jan. 23-24, bringing frigid temperatures and light snow to Fort Collins campuses.
On Friday, temperatures will drop into the teens and 20s, with light snow creating slick travel conditions. By Friday night, temperatures are expected to fall to around or below zero, and little warming is anticipated Saturday, with highs remaining in the teens.
Another surge of arctic air is expected Sunday, bringing continued cold and possible flurries. Conditions are forecasted to improve on Monday and Tuesday as temperatures climb above freezing.
Slick roads are likely, resulting in slow travel Friday night and Saturday. Campus community members are advised to dress warmly, check road conditions, be aware of frost bite, and monitor weather updates through the National Weather Service.
Take precautions to protect campus buildings by ensure all windows are closed and report any heating issues to Facilities Management right away.
Potential Public Safety Power Shutoff Friday, Jan. 16
UPDATE (3:15 p.m.): Foothills Campus north buildings north of Laporte Ave. are expected to be impacted.
UPDATE (2 p.m. Jan. 15): A high wind warning will be in effect tomorrow, Jan. 16. Current forecasts show wind gusts will peak late morning on Friday until around 1-2pm with gusts 60-70 mph in Wellington and north to the state border. Fort Collins will see wind gusts in the 30-40 mph. Foothills will be windy with 50-60mph gusts.
Xcel is considering a Public Safety Power Shutoff due to elevated wildfire risks. This area currently includes the Foothills Campus including Christman Field, and ARDEC. Power lines will be de-energized from approximately 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Main and South campuses are not expected to be impacted, but smaller power outages are possible.
***
ORIGINAL POST: Xcel Energy is closely monitoring wildfire risk conditions in Larimer and Weld counties, including parts of Fort Collins and nearby communities to the north and west. Due to high winds, low humidity, and extremely dry ground conditions, there is a heightened risk for wildfires.
Due to dry conditions and low relative humidity, fire weather conditions will be elevated to critical. Stronger winds are expected for Friday across the northeast plains where gusts to 65 mph will be possible.
To reduce wildfire risk and protect public safety, Xcel Energy may implement a Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) for a limited number of customers in Larimer and Weld counties starting at 7 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 16.
Power outages may last several hours to several days as crews inspect and repair damage before re-energizing lines.
