An Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attack is the use of a “homemade” bomb and/or destructive device to destroy, incapacitate, harass, or distract. IEDs can come in many forms, ranging from a small pipe bomb to a sophisticated device capable of causing massive damage and loss of life.
If You Receive a Bomb Threat Over the Phone:
- Stay calm and keep your voice calm.
- Pay close attention to details and obtain as much information as possible.
- Take notes: Record every word spoken by caller, background noise, ask questions.
- If you have time take notes on the Bomb Threat Checklist.
- If possible, alert someone nearby by note requesting their assistance or to call 911.
- Attempt to identify the caller’s number and write it down.
- Call 911 or CSUPD immediately and give them your notes.
- If the bomb threat is made electronically or with a hard copy, do your best to preserve the material without deleting, forwarding, or handling it.
If a Device has been Found:
- Call 911 and follow all instructions.
- Ensure no one touches the device.
- Isolate the area where the device is located and initiate evacuations as necessary.
If there is a Bomb Threat Situation:
- Follow instructions from CSUPD, emergency personnel, or university officials.
- DO NOT touch or approach suspicious items. Report items to CSUPD.
- Take personal belongings when you leave. Leave doors and windows open.
- DO NOT pull the fire alarm.
- DO NOT turn light switches on or off.
- DO NOT use elevators.
