CSU Lightning and Severe Weather Alert System
Colorado’s weather is highly unpredictable, with temperatures ranging from very hot to very cold. Severe storms can form quickly, bringing heavy rain, lightning, high winds, and hail. While rare, tornadoes are also possible.
Colorado State University employs a weather alert system to ensure campus safety during severe weather events. This system activates a siren and beacon when lightning is detected.
When a Lightning Alert is Activated
- Seek safe shelter immediately.
- All activities must cease, and participants should be encouraged to seek safe shelter.
Warning Signal
- Sound: One 30-second blast from the horn.
- Visual: A red strobe light on the assembly begins flashing intermittently.
All-Clear Signal
- Sound: Three separate 1-second blasts from the horn.
- Visual: The red strobe light stops flashing.
- Action: Activities may resume after the all-clear signal is given.
Sensor Locations
The warning horns and beacons are strategically placed at:
- Main Campus:
- Student Recreation Center
- Jack Christiansen Memorial Track
- South Campus:
- CSU Tennis Pavilion
What to Do When the Alert Horn Sounds
- Stop all outdoor activities immediately.
- Seek nearby shelter:
- Safest locations are large, enclosed structures equipped with plumbing and electric wiring.
- If no building is nearby, seek shelter in an enclosed metal vehicle, such as a car, van, or bus.
Important Note
If conditions appear unsafe but the warning signal has not sounded:
- Use your best judgment to assess the situation.
- Seek shelter if necessary.
- If you hear thunder, get to a safe place immediately.
- CSU’s Emergency Notifications may be used in the event of a weather emergency.
