Advisory: Caller ID spoofing from 491 prefix

CSUPD recently received a caller ID spoofing report using the CSU 491 prefix. Caller ID spoofing is a type of deceptive behavior in which someone falsifies their identity and a phone call appears to come from a known or trusted number, such as a local business, government agency, or even a personal contact to trick individuals into believing the information is legitimate. It is commonly used in cyberattacks and fraud. In this instance, the perpetrator spoofed the CSU information line of 970-491-6444 and claimed to be an immigration authority.

Preventing caller ID spoofing is challenging because the phone system allows manipulation of caller ID data. If a call comes from an unfamiliar number or looks suspicious (even if it seems local), let it go to voicemail. Legitimate callers will usually leave a message. Spoofers can make it look like the call is coming from a known contact or organization. If you become suspicious after answering, hang up and call the person or organization back using a different number you trust (e.g., from their website or your contact list).

You can report caller ID spoofing to CSUPD (970-491-6425) or other local law enforcement agencies.
